Relentless Waves

of Tormenting Memories (2023-24)

Memories are cyclical by nature, deeply embedded in the human psyche. Over time, they may fade, but never truly disappear. They linger and resurface to the mind like waves crashing upon the shore. Each time they are recalled, they reveal new details and evoke different emotions.
As a sexual assault survivor, the memory of the assault never fades. It resurfaces with the slightest trigger at any moment in my life. Each time I recall those painful memories, there are moments of vulnerability and fragility where the weight of the memory feels overwhelming. Conversely, there are also moments of immense strength and resilience where overcoming the trauma feels possible and empowering.

Utilizing water as an element that can be gentle, like a soft rain nourishing the earth, or incredibly harmful, like a hurricane, I try to represent the emotional spectrum of myself as a survivor.
In this installation, I am sharing a story about how water helped me heal by washing away the presence of the aggressor. Although the memory of the trauma remains, water cleanses, renews, and continually helps me to move forward.Just like the persistence of a river, finding its path, no matter how many obstacles encountered.
